If someone tells you friendly bacteria can grow their own supernatant inside your body, tell them the supernatant is only as good as its food source.

Buying probiotics is easy when you know what to look for. Please look at VII  Buying Probiotics below.
I also know the ethics, and Research & Development companies Mannatech & Shaklee make outstanding probiotics.

Except for My Notes this information is from Natasha Trenev's book with scientific references - Probiotics Nature's Internal Healers. -
www.natren.com

Natasha established a standard for the Natural Products Quality Assurance Alliance that was read into congressional record.

Her book has a romantic story of a prince & a beautiful woman who wanted some starter culture grains from the "gift of the gods" Kefir that the prince & his people jealously guarded. Natasha's family yogurt is still enjoyed by the crowned heads of Europe.

My Notes: Probiotics are Guardians - Also in Natasha's Book

The importance of pro-biotics, which means "for life" - is finally being understood in the USA, which is #37 in health worldwide. There are more than 100 trillion bacteria in the human GI system. Boosting their levels provides health-promoting protection. Lack of friendly flora can be the major cause of dire diseases. See IV in the outline below.

The SAD - Standard American Diet - creates indigestion & acid, and inflammation in joints, arteries, the brain, & organs. It leads to degenerative & auto-immune disorders. Taste, texture, & convenience are what many people mostly consider.

Of course the cost of fast & "packaged" foods is cheaper than wholesome food. Like mac & cheese and nitrite-laden hot dogs etc. Nitrites are proven cancer-causing preservatives.

When you read the outline below on probiotics you'll see why I'd much rather have billions of friendly organisms to control, kill, and/or chase away pathogens, than any antibiotics killing off my vital friendly flora.

___

In 1929 Sir Alexander Fleming was growing a culture of Staph bacteria. During his two-week vacation a rare spore of penicillin drifted in the window from the lab below his floor, & settled in the culture.

When Fleming came back he saw the Staph had grown except for a halo around the Penicillin spore which protected itself by producing substances toxic to the Staph.

Thus penicillin became famous for killing pathogens. Then they manipulated the substances by making "drugs."
You shouldn't manipulate Mother Nature as you willl read below.

Pasteur is the scientist who made penicillin famous. He was flamboyant, rich, & had family connections.
He claimed bacteria aren't change by their surroundings.

But on his deathbed Pasteur said he was wrong. His words were
"The body's environment" {ecology}" is everything."

____

I  Microorganisms have three names. They start broad & break down into specific steps. Below is a familiar example.

1. Genus - Felis {cat}
2. Species - Two different ones are tiger & tabby cat.
3. Strain - Disposition or character
4. The first letter of the genus is always capitalized. L stands for Lactobacillus; B = Bifidobacterium

We have bacteria called "resident" that colonizes in the GI tract. The most important are the L. acidophilus. "Transient" bacteria such as L. bulgaricus & L. casei pass through. They have their own benefits plus help resident bacteria.

Certain strains of friendly bacteria produce powerful antibiotics & organic acids. Some also produce hydrogen peroxide. Unlike lab-produced drugs, the natural antibiotics & other substances good bacteria make are healthful for you but dangerous to pathogens.

When good bacteria colonize you are helping build a protection system for health concerns, like the flu, leaky gut syndrome & even colon cancer.

Egg-based mayonnaise foods & ground beef are often contaminated with harmful bacteria.
Most ulcers are caused by H. pylori, a bacteria that burrows into the stomach lining. Friendly bacteria can protect you from it.

L. bulgaricus is a primary bacteria that protects yogurt from spoiling. In 1984, Drs. N.M. Abdel-bar & N.D. Harris wrote "Inhibitory Effect of L. bulgaricus on Psychotrophic Bacteria in...Foods" showing high concentrations of L. bulgaricus completely prevented growth of the harmful organisms tested.

Eating a lot of meats can buildup putrefactive bacteria because they take a long time to digest.

____

My Notes

Conventionally-raised meat are given antibiotics and growth hormones to make animals grow un-naturally fast. They are raised in stressful housing; I read some cattle growers take a truck & fill it with chewing gum with the wrappers on to feed their cattle.
Their comment? It doesn't matter what you feed cows; they make everything they need from whatever you feed them.

See the "Articles" at http://www.EatWild.com - grassfed beef & other meats & products are health-giving.

I include refined cooking oils and shortening in the "fats" above because chemicals have been added &/or nutrients are stripped, giving an unbalanced food source. Shortening is famous for being hydrogenated. It can cause brain disorders.

Unrefined oils have balanced nutrients
http://www.TropicalTraditions.com

Some of the very worst meats are nitrate &/or nitrite-laden bologne, hot dogs, etc. Those preservatives are linked to cancer. Studies show children who eat 3 hot dogs a week are more likely to develop leukemia.

Eat plenty of protective foods: a wide variety of raw fruits, veggies, & healthy fats like avocados, olive oil, fish oil, probiotics, glyconutrients, & fiber. Whole grains like stone ground unbromated whole wheat etc. - Many people allergic to wheat & other foods are able to eat them after adding foundational nutrients the body needs anyway.

___

II
Bacteria: Good, Bad, & Changeable

A} All species of Lactobacillus are friendly. Only 13 have good anti-microbial qualities
B} Almost all strains of E. coli are harmless.
C} Streptococcus {S.} thermophilis & S. lactis are beneficial. S. viridians is a pathogen
D} Good or bad, the strain is what counts
E} Benign or neutral bacteria can change into pathogens if you don't have protection.

Acidolin is a natural antibiotic from L. acidophilus & very active against a wide range of organisms. It doesn't attack helpful lactic acid-producing bacteria & is nontoxic to human tissue cells.

Bulgarican & acidophilin are also natural antibiotics extremely active against a wide range of pathogens & changeable pathogens. For instance acidophilin fights Salmonella typhimurium, S. aureus & Clostridium perfringens

III
Probiotics

A} Protect the GI's mucous lining to prevent pathogens from attaching & growing
B} Create heat unfriendly flora don't like
C} Release hydrogen peroxide & organic acids Salmonella & Shigella hate
D} Eat up excess LDL & cholesterol so it won't be re-absorbed
E} Make vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, adrenal hormones, enzymes, antioxidants, cellular building blocks, & immunostimulants
F} Prevent pre cancer-causing pathogens & chemicals from turning cancerous, like nitrates {preservatives} in hot dogs & other processed meats

IV
What a Lack of Friendly Flora Can Lead to

Acid reflux, hearburn  -  Acne, psoriasis, eczema   -  Allergies/sensitivities   -  Body Odor  -  Brain disorders  -  Candida, fungal overgrowth  -  High cholesterol & LDL  - Chronic immune suppression  -  Cravings  -  Dandruff  -  Diabetes  -  Diarrhea, constipation, diverticulitis, IBS  -  Genetic Disorders  -  Immunity  -  Infections  - Inflammation  -  Herb cleansings  -  Lupus  -  Nutrient malabsorption, vitamin & mineral deficiencies  -  Rheumatic complaints  -  Toxic liver  -  Ulcers  -  Weight gain or unable to lose weight.

V
Foods that Promote {or not} "Friendly" Organisms

A} High intake of raw preferably organic fruits & vegetables, & whole grains. Organic won't have pesticides or chemicals that can lead to health complications.

B} pH factor - Maintaining the normal acidic environment of your stomach is very important since an imbalance will allow some species develop & others die.

ANTACIDS, baking soda, RX's, & over-the-counter acid-neutralizing products upset the acid-balance & allow harmful bacteria to survive.
Have plenty of friendly flora to help with digestion.

My Notes

When you were young do you remember being told to chew your food more than 10 times? If food is swallowed partially-chewed you can get extreme acid-reflux, leaky gut syndrome, IBS, & skin problems.

VI
Antibiotics

A} Kill all living organisms leaving cell walls vulnerable to bacteria you pick up in public, your food, air, water, or even your carpet or animals. Then bad bacteria, yeast, & fungi can find attachment places to grow.
B} Vulnerable gut walls can lead to Leaky Gut Syndrome
C} Cause pathogens to mutate which makes them stronger

My Notes

It's funny isn't it, that friendly flora make nutrients we need for health, yet repel & kill undesirable organisms?

VII
Buying Probiotics

Select one that retains the original supernantant which is the "nourishment" and protection of friendly bacteria, and keeps their colonizing abilities intact. Without the supernatant you will get an ineffective and maybe dangerous probiotic supplement.

A} Does the probiotic have the DNA fingerprint from the original culture?

B} Label should state "Hydrogen peroxide-positive" L. acidophilus is the most effective. L. acidophilus resides in the small intestines.

C} Only take standardized & certified by lab analysis. Each bacteria must be grown in the same growth medium each time it is produced, & label should say so.

D} L. bulgaricus LB-51 - most effective in powder or wafer form, not capsule. It is "transient," not a colonizer. Famous for relieving acid reflux, appetite, enterocolitis. Of great benefit to resident bacteria. S. thermophilus & L. bulgaricus are the *real yogurt* bacteria.
Bulgarians live long healthy lives - they eat cultured dairy products & don't use chemicals in food.

E} DDS -1 {dairy} - Some companies use DDS as a trademark. The strain should be the true DDS-1 identified in original research & produced according to published specifications. DDS stands for the University of Nebraska's Dept. of Dairy Science.

F} {Non-dairy} NAS Super Adhesion, certified organic culture base of modified garbanzo bean {chick pea} extract. African & Asian people are often milk intolerant.

G} B. bifidum Malyoth - both dairy & non-dairy. Overall support, large intestine therapy, liver detox, food & chemical sensitivities, during & after antibiotic & chemo use. Resides in the large intestine.

H} B. infantis NLS - Babies bottle-fed or delivered by cesarean are lacking in protective bacteria. B. infantis helps prevent allergies & infections, & may help with weight gain from nitrogen retention.

Mom should take B. infantis in her 3rd trimester, 1/2 to 1 tsp. in unchilled filtered water daily along with her other probiotics for her health and a more healthy baby. Unless you know milk is tolerated easily don't give a dairy-based product to your infant.
The amount of "friendly flora" your infant has is up to you Mom

Research hasn't proven probiotics make the enzyme to break down casein {a milk protein}, but it does make lactase that lets many lactose-intolerant people eat dairy.

Research shows babies have fewer friendly bacteria than 30 years ago. Toxins in the environment & nutrient-depleted fresh foods are the cause. Breast-fed is better for baby.

My Notes

VIII
Make Real Cultured Yogurt at Home

Make your own real, Bulgarian-style yogurt from "Starter" with a combination of Strepococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus, LB-51 super strain. You can find "Yogurt Starter" by Natren at health food stores.
http://www.Natren.com - Their yogurt is enjoyed by the crowned heads of Europe.

IX
"Trillions" on the Label? Be Suspicious

A} Centrifugation: the easiest & least expensive. Bacteria & supernantant are dumped into a centrifuge & with a flip of a switch, they are thrown against the sides of the centrifuge with tremendous force. Many bacteria end up with ruptured cell walls while others are killed outright.

Bacteria form themselves into chains as they multiply; during the centrifugal process these chains are broken. The result is trillions of broken pieces.
*Separating the supernatant & bacteria does not make it dairy-free.

Remember bacteria multiply into colonies & if they are processed right. You will pay more but will get the best. It costs much less in the long run to buy what you're worth.

B} Ultrafiltration: bacteria are put through a giant "strainer." Supernantant is stripped away. Some chains are broken.
Without the supernantant growing medium as a buffer, bacteria are left naked & exposed to the killing power of stomach acids & "bad" microorganisms, & arrive at the destination stripped of microbe-fighting substances & the food source they need to live.

C} Cheap imitations: L. sporagenes - B. coagulous - E. faecium {some cause food poisoning} - S. faecium - S. streptococcus - E. enterococcus - B. laterosporus is used to create a false "curing" reaction.

D} Some soil bacteria can cause symptoms to subside, but if supplement is stopped symptoms come back worse.

E} "Private Label" - may have purchased from mass-produced cultures grown from inexpensive strains. The label of at least 80% of probiotics on the market aren't accurate.

F} Best process: lyophilization. Bacteria are freeze dried in a vacuum. This arrests their growth & keeps their vital supernantant intact so they are ready to work for you when they arrive in the GI tract.
Make sure the brand you use doesn't use centrifugation or ultrafiltation after freeze-drying.

G} Liquid: isn't stable & usually doesn't get to the shelf until after bacteria die. Must be handled with care.
